CHINGFORD CIRCULAR WALK
11am to 2pm
Starting location: Epping Forest Visitor Centre, 6 Ranger’s Rd, London E4 7QH
Join the Epping Forest Heritage Trust for a captivating heritage walk that explores the rich history and natural beauty of this iconic area. The walk begins at the Hunting Lodge in Chingford, a historic building dating back to the 16th century and follows a circular route through the stunning woodlands of Epping Forest.
Led by knowledgeable guides, this walk is the perfect opportunity to learn about the forest’s rich heritage, from its royal connections to its conservation efforts today.
Suitable for all ages, this gentle walk is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in both the history and natural beauty of one of London’s most cherished green spaces.

Visit Waltham Forest Archives and Local Studies Library to see fascinating photographs, maps and documents from North Chingford’s history.
The Archives team and local history experts will give tours of the Search room and introduce you to sources for local history and family history research.

Get ready to move, groove, and sparkle! This is your chance to dive into the vibrant world of Bollywood dance and to learn more about its history—where high-energy moves meet rich traditions from Indian classical and folk styles. Whether you’re a total beginner or a dance floor regular, join us for 45 minutes of fun that celebrates rhythm, culture. Free session. No experience necessary.

Join the Chingford Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society for an hour of fun songs from the last century. With something for everyone, this really is one not to be missed.

NORTH CHINGFORD HERITAGE TRAIL WITH JOANNA MONCRIEFF (QUALIFIED TOUR GUIDE)
12pm to 1.30pm
Outside Chingford Station, Station Approach, London E4 6AL
This walk celebrates the rich heritage that can be found in North Chingford through its historic buildings and the people that shaped the area. Starting outside Chingford Station, the walk follows a route down to Chingford Green and ends at Pimp Hall Nature Reserve, with a unique chance to see inside the historic 16th century Pimp Hall Dovecote building.
Walk is approx. 1 mile on pavement and includes road crossings.

STEP BACK IN TIME: AT PIMP HALL NATURE RESERVE

Pimp Hall Nature Reserve, off Kings Road, Chingford, E4 7HR
Come and enjoy an afternoon of history brought back to life at one of Chingford’s hidden gems. Look inside the historic Dovecote, one of the area’s oldest buildings, and meet both famous and everyday characters from Chingford’s past. Discover the farming history and natural heritage of this beautiful nature reserve.

WINDRUSH DAY: SONGS AND CELEBRATION

North Chingford Methodist Church: 49 Station Rd, London E4 7BU
Join the House of La Touche choir and historian Peter Ashan for this unique Windrush Day partnership, pairing song and discussion.
Peter will be presenting a Windrush talk plus Q&A, bookended by songs from the wonderful House of La Touche choir, including gospel, RnB, pop and contemporary classics.
Peter Ashan, educator, historian and author, will be talking about his experiences of growing up in Waltham Forest as a child of Windrush parents and about his book Freedom Walk: The Roots of Diversity in Waltham Forest which looks at the development of Waltham Forest into the multi-ethnic multi-faith community it is today. Peter will be also signing copies of his book ‘Freedom Walk The Roots of Diversity in Waltham Forest’.

THE HIGHWAY RAT, STORY TELLING AND MESSY PLAY SESSION

Join Planet Compassion for this fabulous ‘Imagine, Explore, Create’ session in the Children’s Community Garden (next to Chingford Library). Themed around the Julia Donaldson story The Highway Rat, children will enjoy the story and learn about local highwayman Dick Turpin and his connection to Epping Forest.
Children will get to explore the garden for natural ingredients for use in making mud cakes (this is messy play so please dress children appropriately).

TALKING PROUD - A CELEBRATION OF WALTHAM FOREST’S RICH LGBTQ+ HERITAGE, WITHIN THE THEME OF DANCE.

Novelist Nicola Raynor will be joining Jacky Logan BEM to discuss her latest Novel ‘The Paris Dancer’. A heart-wrenching and unforgettable story of courage, friendship and resistance, inspired by the incredible true story of a Jewish ballroom dancer in Paris during WWII. Jo’s bookshop will be selling signed copies.
There will also be archive footage and a display to celebrate 25 years since the ‘UK GAY SPORTS FESTIVAL’ was held in Waltham Forest to mark the millennium. The UK same sex dance championships were held in the Lloyd Park Theatre, and over 20 different sports were represented all across the borough with gay participants from across the world. NORTH CHINGFORD TRANSPORT WEEKEND AND HERITAGE BUS TOURS
11am to 4pm
Chingford Station & The Hub Community Rooms: Station Approach, London E4 6AL
Celebrate the history of public transport manufacture in Waltham Forest (including trains, buses, trams and trolley buses).
The fascinating exhibition will showcase the history of these vehicles and their unrivalled links to the borough.
To celebrate the North Chingford Heritage Festival, visitors will be offered the chance to travel on an original heritage RT Bus (which was once part of London’s largest ever standardised bus fleet).
The heritage bus tours run from 11am to 4pm and will leave from Chingford Station and take a circular route around North Chingford, with the opportunity to alight at the Epping Forest Visitors Centre; for visits to the Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, Visitor Centre and Museum, Butlers Retreat, The Royal Forest Hotel and Epping Forest.

OPEN HOUSE TOUR OF OUR LADY OF GRACE AND ST TERESA OF AVILA

Open house tour of Our Lady of Grace and St Teresa of Avila, which is a Grade II listed Roman Catholic church, built in 1930 by a local builder George W. Martyn who was also the co-designer of the church. Unique heritage facts and insights about the church will be revealed on this tour, including the unique story of how it was first developed.
The meeting point for the tour is at the side entrance of the church on Kings Road.

Cados will show their own award-winning 100 year anniversary film which celebrates the history and current use of Mornington Hall, plus a nostalgic look back at the local area with 5 decades of rare archive film made by Acorn Films and songs of the same era performed by the fabulous Music Makers!

DAVID BOOTE'S ROYAL FOREST HOTEL TOURS

The Royal Forest Hotel 4 Ranger’s Rd, London, E4 7QH
It was a destination, an up-market meeting place and a starting point for tours of Epping Forest. The Victorians threw all they had into the design. Hear about the Royal Forest Hotel from its opening in 1880 to its reopening as part of the Heartwood Collection. With the publication of Chingford Historical Society’s book on the history of the hotel, David Boote will lead you round the outside talking about the building’s rich past.
First tour at 11.30am then every hour. Last tour at 3.30pm

THE LIFE & WORK OF JAMES ARTHUR BRIMBLE: A TALK

James Arthur Brimble is best known for his book, ‘London’s Epping Forest’ and this year marks the 75th Anniversary since its first release in 1950. This talk covers his life and work from his humble beginning in Whitechapel to Chingford shop keeper, author and photographer of Epping Forest. A display of his work will be at the Visitor Centre throughout the North Chingford Heritage Festival.

THE HOME FRONT IN WORLD WAR TWO

Talk by Gary Heales, former Assistant Curator at Vestry House Museum and William Morris Gallery. Gary will speak about local people’s experience of the home front during World War Two. Meet Gary afterwards at a book signing session for his work The Home Front in Chingford 1939-1945 (published by Chingford Historical Society in association with Vestry House Museum, 2018).

MINIATURE RAILWAY HERITAGE DAY

Celebrating their 80th anniversary in Ridgeway Park, the Chingford & District Model Engineering club will be holding guided tours of the miniature railway including the engine sheds and workshop followed by rides on the historic trains.
There will also be a chance to see the train ridden by Walt Disney when he famously visited the Miniature Railway in 1952.

James Arthur Brimble uncovered the secrets & beauty of Epping Forest to the public like no one before. Come along for this rare opportunity to see his Epping Forest Collection and learn more about this local legend. Located in the lower gallery.

QUEEN ELIZABETH’S HUNTING LODGE

Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge: 8 Ranger’s Rd, London E4 7QH
Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge is a Grade II* listed former hunting lodge, built at the instruction of King Henry VIII in 1543, located next door to the Epping Forest Visitor Centre at Chingford, on Rangers Road. It is perched on the edge of beautiful Epping Forest overlooking significant ancient trees on all sides, many of which are older than the building itself! Legend has it that Queen Elizabeth I once rode her horse up the steps of the Hunting Lodge. Come along and re-trace Queen Elizabeth I’s steps in this historic gem (free entry). All ages
BE PART OF A UNIQUE EXHIBITION
Your opportunity to sit for a professional portrait and be part of the Heritage Festival.
1 to 14 June

Local photographer Nicky Bamber will be offering members of the community the opportunity to sit for a professional portrait in her North Chingford based photography studio. These portraits will be used to create a North Chingford Heritage exhibition, which will be on display from 1 to 5 July.
The exhibition aims to capture the diverse cultures which exist within the community, which will be reflected in a unique set of beautiful prints, exhibited especially for the North Chingford Heritage Festival.
Sittings will take place between 1 to 14 June and arranged by appointment only.
The subsequent exhibition will be shown in The Village Arcade in Chingford, located on Station Road E4 7DA (next to the Methodist Church). This is also the location of Nicky’s studio.
